The story starts with Chiron trying to find his way in a challenging environment while discovering his sexual identity. He finds support from Juan, a drug dealer played by Mahershala Ali, and his girlfriend Teresa, portrayed by Janelle Monáe, who offer him much-needed care and protection. As he gets older, Chiron faces bullying, confusion, and feelings of isolation, especially regarding his sexual orientation and a troubled relationship with his mother, played by Naomie Harris, who struggles with addiction. The film reaches a climax in Chiron’s adult life, where he appears tough on the outside, but his unresolved feelings for his childhood friend Kevin, played by André Holland, linger.
Moonlight is praised for its thoughtful representation of Black life and LGBTQ+ experiences, alongside its beautiful cinematography and emotional depth. The film won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, making it the first LGBTQ+ film to receive this honor.
